As AI rapidly transforms the global job market, Bill Gates has a blunt message for Gen Z: simply knowing how to use AI tools won’t be enough. The Microsoft cofounder has warned that entry-level jobs, the traditional starting point for most careers, are disappearing fast, and AI is largely to blame.
Gates said AI systems may feel “fun and empowering,” but their impact is already upending the early-career landscape. Despite the hype around becoming AI-literate, fresh graduates are struggling to land jobs as employers automate routine work at scale.
Entry-level roles are vanishing as AI takes over basic tasks
According to Gates, AI is steadily replacing the kind of roles that helped new professionals gain experience. Job listings for entry-level positions in the US have dropped by 35% since January 2023. Sectors like finance and consulting have shifted foundational tasks, such as research and analysis, to AI models, preferring junior hires who can manage or refine AI output rather than learn from scratch.
Even smaller firms are scaling back. An Ohio-based consulting company, Futurety, cancelled its summer intern programme this year, using ChatGPT to run its social media campaigns instead.
Gen Z is rethinking its career path
Faced with shrinking white-collar prospects, many Gen Z workers are looking elsewhere. There’s a noticeable move toward skilled trades: electricians, plumbers, and elevator technicians where jobs remain in demand, pay well, and don’t require a university degree.
Others are drawn to roles that AI still struggles to replicate: teaching, healthcare, and social work. A recent survey found that over half of Gen Z respondents are now considering careers in the trades or public service sectors—a clear break from the corporate track that dominated previous generations.
While Gates still encourages young people to engage with emerging technologies, he stressed that adaptability, emotional intelligence, and practical skills now matter just as much. Employers are seeking workers who can blend AI fluency with creative thinking and human judgement.
In an age where automation is outpacing job creation, Gen Z faces a stark reality: surviving the AI era won’t come from learning the tools alone, it will come from learning how to stay relevant.
