The appearance of Goddess Jagaddhatri is serene yet powerful. She is depicted seated gracefully on a lion, dressed in red garments, and holding a conch, chakra, bow, and arrow in her four hands. The third eye on her forehead symbolizes divine awareness and victory over ignorance.
According to sacred scriptures like Shaktisangama Tantra, Bhavishya Purana, Smriti Sangraha, and Durga Kalpa, the Goddess represents the triumph of purity and divine wisdom over darkness and arrogance.
Jagaddhatri Puja: Origin and Historical Background
The tradition of Jagaddhatri Puja is believed to have begun in Krishnanagar, Nadia district of West Bengal, during the 18th century. It was King Krishnachandra Roy who started the public celebration of this festival.
According to local legends, the king once failed to perform Durga Puja with the required rituals and vowed to make amends. As an act of repentance, he initiated Jagaddhatri Puja in Kartik month, which gradually gained immense popularity across Bengal and Eastern India.
Spiritual Meaning and Symbolism
In Shakta tradition, Jagaddhatri Devi is seen as the embodiment of victory of Sattva (purity) over Tamas (ignorance). The lion beneath her feet represents divine strength, while the elephant demon Karindrasura, crushed under the lion, symbolizes ego and arrogance. Thus, the Goddess teaches humility and self-control.
Sri Ramakrishna Paramahansa regarded the worship of Jagaddhatri as a powerful form of spiritual purification. He said that devotion to the Goddess removes negative emotions like fear, anger, greed, and pride, bringing peace to the devotee’s heart.
The Legend of Karindrasura and the Birth of Jagaddhatri
According to ancient belief, Indra’s celestial elephant, Airavat, was once cursed and transformed into the demon Karindrasura. Empowered by arrogance and strength, he tried to abduct Goddess Ganga after she rejected his proposal. In distress, Ganga prayed to Adishakti Mahamaya, who appeared as Jagaddhatri and destroyed Karindrasura, liberating him from his curse. Since then, the Goddess has been revered as Karindrasura Nishudini, the destroyer of ego and ignorance.
Another version says that Karindrasura was the commander of Durgamasura’s army, and after Durga slew Durgamasura, she manifested as Jagaddhatri to defeat Karindrasura as well. Some texts also equate him with Mahishasura, showing that both represent the same inner enemy — pride and delusion.
Spiritual Essence of Jagaddhatri Puja
The festival of Jagaddhatri Puja is not merely a ritual but a reminder that divine strength lies in humility and self-discipline. Worshipping Goddess Jagaddhatri is believed to cleanse the heart, remove arrogance, and bring spiritual awakening. Devotees observe fasting, decorate idols with grandeur, and chant mantras to seek blessings for peace, prosperity, and protection.
Jagaddhatri Puja 2025 celebrates the Goddess who upholds the universe and restores balance. Her worship is a celebration of inner strength, devotion, and divine wisdom. As devotees prepare to honor her in October 2025, the festival reminds everyone that humility and faith can overcome even the mightiest of obstacles.
