India has emerged as the world’s second-largest market for Claude.ai usage, with software and web development dominating how the country is using generative AI at work, according to Anthropic’s latest Economic Index report.
The findings are part of Anthropic’s fourth Economic Index report, released on January 15.
The AI firm said India ranks behind only the US in overall Claude.ai usage globally, with usage concentrated in a small set of countries, including Japan, the UK, and South Korea.
In India, nearly half of Claude.ai use is tied to technical work, with 45.2 percent of overall usage mapped to computer and mathematical tasks. Anthropic said five of the top 10 Claude use cases in India fall under software and web development, highlighting how developers are increasingly relying on AI tools for routine coding and debugging needs.
An interesting pattern in India’s usage, the report said, is the intensity of web development tasks. Indian users are twice as likely to use Claude for CSS, HTML, and UI styling work, and 1.7 times more likely to rely on it for building and debugging web applications, compared to the global baseline.
Anthropic’s report also flagged other India-specific use cases in emerging tech areas, including developing AI systems such as chatbots and workflow automation, where Indian users are 1.5 times overrepresented. Database administration and data engineering also stood out, with usage 1.4 times above the global baseline.
Beyond software-related work, Claude.ai is also being used for career progression in India. Anthropic said job searching and professional development features among the top tasks, alongside academic work across STEM subjects and business planning for entrepreneurial ventures.
However, the report added that India’s intensity of usage relative to its working-age population remains low. Anthropic’s AI Usage Index (AUI), which measures whether Claude is over- or underrepresented compared to population size, puts India at 0.22, indicating lower-than-expected usage intensity despite its high overall rank.
