Virat Kohli has been brought up several times throughout the India vs England Test series for obvious reasons. Since 2011, this was India's first England tour without the talisman. The announcement of India's squad for the five-match Test series in England came just two weeks after Kohli and Rohit Sharma announced retirement from the format.

India's batting performance without Rohit and Virat was the main topic of discussion prior to the start of the series at Headingley. Four of India's top five players scored hundreds, which swiftly changed that. The conversation about Kohli never quite ceased, despite the fact that India's new-age hitters, led by skipper Shubman Gill, vice-captain Pant, and opener KL Rahul, continued to play brilliantly throughout the series.

Former cricketers constantly missed Kohli's presence with the Indian team, whether it was the incapacity of India to bowl England out on Day 5 at Headingley or Gill's combative response to England opener Zak Crawley on Day 3 at Lord's. For the first time in this series, the batter, Kohli, was missed on Day 5 at Lord's.

Even though Ravindra Jadeja (61*) played an incredible hand, India lost the match by 22 runs while chasing 193. According to former England captain Nasser Hussain, India will have to find a replacement for Kohli, highlighting his reputation of being one of the best while chasing. "No Virat Kohli today. India need to find a new one. The old one has retired. He was the king of the run chase," Hussain said on commentary.

On May 12, five days after captain Rohit Sharma's announcement, Kohli also hung his boots from the Test format. One of India's most prolific run-scorers in all formats, Kohli will continue to play ODIs.

Meanwhile, Kohli's No. 4 spot in Tests is now occupied with Gill, who did a tremendous job up until Lord's - where he managed 16 and 6 in two innings.
