Parthasarathi Shome, Advisor to FM is no outsider to the finance ministry. In his first term during United Progressive Alliance (UPA-I), he along with Finance Minister (FM) P Chidambaram was the brain behind new taxes such as the commodities transaction tax (CTT) and the fringe benefit tax (FBT).

MCX India decided to take all requisite steps as may be necessary including making of relevant representations to various authorities for reconsideration and withdrawal of CTT on non-agri commodities, in view of inequitable nature of the suggested transaction tax structure for non-agri derivatives vis a vis agri-derivatives and currency derivatives

As expected after many speculation about CTT, it was introduced by FM during budget speech, is going to affect volume on all major commodities exchanges including MCX and NCDX. MCX accounts almost 80% of trades from non-agro commodities like bullion metals and energy.

The budget was a mixed bag for the small investor, with a reduction in securities transaction tax, but an introduction in a commodities transaction tax (in non-agricultural commodities).
